I began my flute studies in Brazil, where I graduated from the University of Rio de Janeiro with a degree in music teaching. I performed in several chamber groups and orchestras in Brazil until I received a scholarship from the Helena Rubinstein Foundation to study at the Purchase Conservatory of Music (SUNY), where I was a student of Sandra Miller, Robert Levin, Steve Lubin, and Myron Fink, among others. In 1982, I began a master’s course at the City University of New York, thanks to a scholarship offered by the Brazilian National Council for Research and Scientific Development for research on Baroque ornamentation and performance practices. I specialized in Baroque flute under the guidance of Sandra Miller. When I graduated, I was awarded the Rosa Riegelman Heintz Scholarship in Music. Since my return to my homeland in 1984, I have been teaching and making my instrument better known through concerts, courses, and lectures all over the country. Besides duos with flutist Tom Moore, harpsichordist Sula Kossatz, and pianist Ruth Serrão, I play with the chamber ensembles Sine Nomine and Re-Toques. I have performed in Europe and United States, and have been invited to teach master classes in various institutions all over the globe. I was the recipient of a grant offered by the British Council, in the first instance where this grant was given to a performer specializing in early music, in Brazil. In 1994, I was invited to join the faculty at UNIRIO as visiting professor. Since then, I have been hired as a tenured flute professor at that same institution, where I am head of the woodwind department and teach a graduate course in music criticism. I am also the director of the university’s early-music ensemble, Camerata Quantz. I have acted as coordinator and translator for master classes by artists such as Sandra Miller, Alain Marion, Aurèle Nicolet, Wynton Marsalis, Charles Schlueter, Patrick Cohen, Philippe Racine, and Michel Bellavance. I have worked as translator and technical advisor for Nova Fronteira, Imago, and Relume Dumará (commercial publishers based in Rio de Janeiro). I have translated works for Teatro Leblon, including plays by Edward Albee and other American playwrights. As a producer, I was responsible for the Sol Maior Concerts at the Paço Imperial; the 2004 Festival de Teclados; and the cycles The Four Cardinal Points, The Awakening of the Centuries, Flute Encounters, Venice Shines through the Music of Vivaldi, A Musical Voyage through the Baroque—all in the Cultural Centers of Banco do Brasil. I have been, since its very foundation, the secretary and treasurer of the Association of Brazilian Flutists. I was also the editor of the Association’s journal, the Pattapio, for five years. I received my doctoral degree from UNIRIO. My dissertation, In Search of a Lost World: Flute Methods from Baroque to the XXth Century, is being published by Topbooks and will be coming out in 2008. My latest adventure as a performer was a three-month tour of Brazil with Grupo Re-toques, playing concerts in 75 different cities.
